Heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk has refused to rule out what he calls a ‘freak fight’ against Canelo Alvarez.

One thing we know to be true about professional boxing is that it can often catch us off guard. Whether it be due to insane knockouts, grand spectacles or something outright weird, the sweet science continues to evolve and grow with each and every passing day.

Two men who, at this moment in time, are among the biggest stars in the sport are Oleksandr Usyk and Canelo Alvarez.

In addition to being incredibly well respected, they’re also absolute dynamite inside the squared circle - and that may be an understatement.

They’ve collected world titles and they’ve looked good doing it, but one thing that probably hasn’t been on their radar until recently has been the possibility of them fighting one another. Canelo is known for ‘daring to be great’ but given the weight disparity, you’d have thought this isn’t even a thought that’s entered his mind.

Alas, he’s mentioned in the past that it has, and Usyk confirmed during a recent interview with Parimatch that he isn’t opposed to exploring the possibility down the line.

"To fight Canelo Alvarez, I would have to lose 12kg.  It will be a freak fight. I think firstly I need to do what I have in mind in the heavyweight division, and then maybe arrange such a fight. But the fight with Canelo Alvarez potentially involves big money, so I’m not ruling out the possibility that it will happen."

Big tests lie ahead

Usyk and Canelo both have major, major fights to focus on in the next couple of weeks with both being right in the middle of vital training camps.

The Ukrainian star will be defending the WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, and IBO heavyweight titles against Anthony Joshua in Saudi Arabia on August 20, less than a year after he captured them from the Brit in London.

On the flip side, Canelo Alvarez is hoping to finally put an end to his rivalry with Gennady Golovkin when they collide on September 17 in Las Vegas with the WBA (Super), WBC, IBF, WBO, and The Ring super middleweight titles on the line.
