Wolverhampton Wanderers are thinking about a move for Sporting Lisbon midfielder Matheus Nunes before the transfer window closes, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

Bruno Lage has overseen a quiet summer at Molineux but the West Midlands side could still strengthen significantly ahead of the September 1 deadline.

What is the latest on Nunes?

Wolves received a boost this week in their potential pursuit after The Times reported that fellow suitors Liverpool would not be chasing a deal for the 23-year-old this summer.

It is understood that Nunes has a release clause in his contract valued at £51 million, so Wolves may need to break their transfer record to complete a deal.

There were reports that the Reds were readying an immediate bid for the eight-cap Portugal talent after Thiago Alcantara was ruled out for six weeks with an injury at Anfield, but that no longer appears to be the case.

A blow may have still come the way of Wolves, however, with the player apparently rejecting a contract offer from the club in favour of waiting for an official approach from Liverpool.

Nevertheless, Wolves seem undeterred by this development and could still make a move before the window closes, according to Jones.

What has Jones said on Nunes?

The transfer insider claims that Nunes is now a clear target for the club ahead of the September deadline.

He claims that if Wolves could get a deal agreed it is a move that would significantly bolster the options at Lage’s disposal.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “They're looking a bit deeper to midfielder and Matheus Nunes seems to be one that is clearly in their thoughts now. If Wolves can actually get a deal done on that front, it would really, really strengthen them.”

Would Nunes be a good signing?

It is an ambitious approach but, if they can pull it off, it would be a huge coup for the Midlands side.

Nunes is only 23 and his value is only likely to increase, so he would arrive at the club with significant sell-on potential.

With Ruben Neves set to enter the final two years of his contract, and Joao Moutinho now 35 years old, it makes sense for Wolves to begin considering what comes next.

It could well prove difficult to convince Nunes to sign amid interest from Liverpool but playing regularly in the Premier League during a World Cup year would do his chances of a call-up come November no harm at all.
