Tyson Fury has been one of the best heavyweight fighters the boxing world has ever seen, leaving the sport with that coveted undefeated record, with just one draw preventing him from having a 100% win rate in the ring.

At the time of retiring, he was the WBC, Ring magazine and lineal heavyweight champion of the world after his last fight saw him conquer Dillian Whyte.

Prior to the Whyte clash, Fury was famously embroiled in a trilogy with knockout specialist, Deontay Wilder.

Their first fight ended in a draw despite Fury looking out cold on the canvas at one point. That’s just testament to Fury’s guile, never giving up and fighting until the very end.

After that draw, he went on to beat Wilder twice thanks to a tactical knockout in their rematch and then a knockout in the third and final bout.

Fury has been teasing us about a potential undisputed heavyweight fight which would be a once in a generation match-up with the winner of Oleksandr Usyk vs Anthony Joshua 2.

He also looked to set up a trilogy fight with Derek Chisora more recently, however that is now clearly off the table.

The Gypsy King’s constant U-Turns on his future on social media has let fans believing it was all a front with their favourite fighter destined to step foot in the ring once again.

However, he looks to have finally stepped away from boxing, announcing his retirement on his Twitter account on his 34th birthday.

Taking to social media, this is what he had to say: “Massive thanks to everyone who had an input in my career over the years & after long hard conversations, I’ve finally decided to walk away & on my 34th birthday, I say bon voyage. Here’s a few who made it special along the way…”

After thanking a range of people from the likes of Frank Warren and Sugar Hill to his dad, he continued his statement: “Sorry if I missed you, there’s too many to name! Massive shout out to  Paris Fury, who helped me more than anyone, & most of all thank you, God. See you all on the other side, you big dossers – 2008-2022.”

He’s only just shared the news so as of yet he hasn’t vacated his belts. Could this be another Tyson Fury publicity stunt about his future? He does seem to say what he wants, when he wants.

I think it’s safe to say all boxing fans would love to see him continue his illustrious career after his heroic comeback where he battled his demons and overcame mental health struggles. Fury has cemented his place as an all-time great of the sport.

Maybe he got a dictionary for his birthday today and has learnt what retirement actually means!
