Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard will want a breakthrough in his hunt for a midfielder before the end of the transfer window, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

The Liverpool legend has overseen a busy summer at Villa Park and will be looking to add to his squad ahead of the September 1 deadline.

What is the latest transfer news from Villa Park?

It has been a week of controversy in the West Midlands with Football Insider reporting that Gerrard has had a falling out with striker Ollie Watkins.

The publication claims that the club may now look to replace the England international ahead of the deadline after he was a surprise omission from Villa’s starting line-up against Bournemouth last weekend.

Five new signings have already made their way to the club this summer including Diego Carlos, Philippe Coutinho, Robin Olsen and Boubacar Kamara, but more could be on their way.

Jones has previously told GIVEMESPORT that Gerrard has his eyes on a more traditional number and the club could keep pushing for one ahead of deadline day.

What has Jones said on Villa’s plans?

Jones understands that bringing such a player in this summer would be a dream scenario for Aston Villa.

The transfer insider claims that it is a situation that Gerrard himself will want to see a breakthrough soon with plans for a new midfielder in place for a while.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “It's the dream scenario. I don't know whether it will happen. They want a number eight and that's been the case for a long time now. It’s slightly worrying for them that nothing's happened but it’s a Steven Gerrard position so he’ll want some breakthrough on that front”

Why are Villa targeting a midfielder?

Kamara has already made his way to the club to bolster their options in defensive midfield, but it seems a player who can influence the game at both ends remains on the cards.

Exciting prospect Carney Chukwuemeka has also been sold to Chelsea during the current window which may have accelerated plans to bring in a new recruit at Villa Park.

Last Saturday saw Villa start with Kamara as a holding midfielder with John McGinn and Jacob Ramsey in more advanced roles.

Beyond the latter two, Gerrard does not have options at his disposal to rotate so it is understandable that he wants to add greater depth to the area.

PSV midfielder Ibrahim Sangare has been linked with a move and it will be interesting to see whether or not Villa make a fresh approach for his services.
