Timo Werner is back where he's most comfortable: RB Leipzig.When the German forward moved to Chelsea in 2020, he did so as a legitimate contender for the European Golden Shoe who was enjoying a lucrative season with 34 goals in just 45 appearances.However, for whatever reason, Werner simply couldn't transfer that form to Stamford Bridge as he failed to assert himself as Chelsea's main man with only 12 strikes across his debut campaign.

Werner's Chelsea woes

In fact, Werner's individual output was so disappointing that the Blues immediately sought to sign another striker the following summer for a club-record fee in the form of Romelu Lukaku.

And while that move obviously didn't work out either, Werner was still unable to capitalise upon his replacement's woes as he once again limped to an underwhelming goal tally. This time, 11 strikes.

Don't get it twisted, Werner still proved to be a likeable presence in west London who gave his all from the first minute to the last, often shining when played out wide, but at the end of the day, Chelsea signed him to score goals.

Werner back at RB Leipzig

So when the Blues decided to part ways with the 26-year-old this summer, it ultimately felt like the correct decision for everyone as much as Werner still had a special place in the hearts of fans.

And his escape plan was a sensible one because he returned to the Red Bull Arena, hoping to rekindle the European-level goalscoring form that attracted Chelsea to sign him in the first place.

Makes sense, right? Well, even more so when you see how quickly Werner has readjusted to life in the Bundesliga because it took him just 36 minutes to get back on the scoresheet for Leipzig.

Werner opens his Leipzig account... again

Werner marked his second debut for the German side with a goal against FC Koln that rather fittingly embodied the very kind of luck that he was bereft of during his time in blue.

While, sure, Werner didn't help himself at times with some of his woeful Chelsea misses, let's just say that he still could have done with a slice of luck of the kind that he profited from this weekend.

That's because Werner was able to score from 30 yards in - how shall we say? - rather fortuitous circumstances, benefitting from an early contender for the worst goalkeeping clanger of 2022/23 - check it out:

A show of confidence

While you can only read so much into a longe-range punt from Werner, it's not the not ridiculous to infer that taking on a curved shot from so far out is a sign of renewed confidence back in Germany.

Besides, the man himself admitted at times that he was struggling in the Premier League having missed a series of golden opportunities that he would have gobbled up in a Leipzig shirt.

And although he does of course owe a massive favour to Marvin Schwäbe for a classic case of 'butter fingers', you make your own luck in life and Werner certainly did that by taking on such an ambitious attempt.

Plus, that could well be the stroke of luck that Werner needs to feel like himself again in front of goal and start delivering the scoring tallies that we all know he can produce when he's on song.
