Ten Hag admitted it was 'quite clear' when asked about the impact of the loss on the team: "It's rubbish. It's poor. We need higher standards than that, that's clear."

When asked about where it has gone wrong following a bright pre-season, the Dutch manager wasn't keen to find any excuses for the poor start: "I can bring up several things why [it's gone wrong so far], but it looks like excuses, and excuses are not there in a top [club].

"We have to deliver, and we didn't do."

He added: "We have to change. That's quite clear. We have to start better, we have to stick to the team, stick to the plan... We didn't do that today."

"One mistake, okay, can happen. But then a second and a third mistake - it's not acceptable. It is what we have to work on and players have to know that."

When asked if he felt pressure following the defeat, he insisted that pressure is 'always there' and that he has to now find solutions.

Ten Hag was also interviewed by Sky Sports after the match, and admitted, via @UtdReport on Twitter, that new players are needed, and that he could've made more than just five substitutions: "We need new players and quality players. We will try and convince them to join."

"Mistakes are part of football, you have to keep going but you have [to] especially act — It [three subs at half-time] was about bringing fresh ones. I could have changed all eight others as well."

United now sit bottom of the Premier League table after two games. The last manager to lose his first two games in charge of the club was John Chapman in 1921.

They face Liverpool next time out in the league and now face the very serious prospect of being without a win in the first three games of the season.
