The Red Devils have spent more than £65million on securing fresh talent since the transfer window reopened for business, but Gakpo has been identified as another target by boss Erik ten Hag.
What’s the latest news involving Gakpo?
According to The Telegraph, Manchester United have added PSV Eindhoven winger Gakpo to their list of potential targets ahead of the September 1 deadline.
The report suggests that the Red Devils would need to part with as much as £35million to entice the Eredivisie giants into selling the seven-cap Netherlands international.
Ten Hag, who was appointed as Manchester United’s chief following the conclusion of last season, has been looking to put his stamp on the squad.
However, PSV’s hopes of qualifying for the group stages of the Champions League could be pivotal in ten Hag’s pursuit of Gakpo, who has already registered three goals and three assists in five appearances this season.
That is because the 23-year-old has revealed that he is more likely to remain with his current employers if they overcome Rangers in their Champions League play-off.
What has Pete O’Rourke said about Gakpo?
O’Rourke believes that ten Hag is continuing to target Eredivisie talent having already signed Tyrell Malacia and Lisandro Martinez from Feyenoord and Ajax respectively.
The journalist feels concluding Gakpo’s arrival would be an astute piece of business by Manchester United.
O’Rourke told GIVEMESPORT: “Obviously, ten Hag, so far, has shopped back in the Dutch market, which he knows very well, with some of his signings.
“Gakpo will be another one. I think he’s a player who has real potential and could be a top signing for United.”
Why is Gakpo of interest to Manchester United?
Ten Hag has inherited a Manchester United squad low on confidence, having finished 13 points adrift of Champions League qualification last term.
But the Red Devils clearly need further investment as they have started the new season in nightmare fashion, with a 2-1 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion being followed up by a 4-0 thumping at the hands of Brentford.
Gakpo could add much-needed firepower to Manchester United’s attack, emphasised by the fact he has racked up 81 goal contributions in 140 PSV appearances.
He may be in the early stages of his career but, having already got his hands on plenty of silverware, the Dutchman has already shown that he has a bright future ahead of him.
