Manchester United are still in the market for a forward, believes Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth.

So far this transfer window, the Red Devils have managed to strengthen a couple of areas of their squad, including central defence with the addition of Lisandro Martinez, but they are yet to improve their forward line.

What is the latest transfer news involving United?

United, who lost 4-0 to Brentford over the weekend, are currently being linked with a few different strikers as manager Erik ten Hag looks to bolster his attack.

According to The Athletic, they have held discussions over bringing Atletico Madrid's Alvaro Morata back to the Premier League.

However, the sports website claims that moves for Barcelona's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Mauro Icardi are unlikely.

Another name who looks to be off the table is former West Ham forward Marko Arnautovic, with the Manchester club recently cooling their interest in the Bologna man.

What has Sheth said about United?

While there clearly is not too many elite forwards on the market right now, Sheth still expects United to do something before the transfer window closes.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, the Sky Sports reporter said: "[Anthony] Martial played very well in pre-season, so he will be giving [Cristiano] Ronaldo competition, and I think they'll still be in the market to bring someone in to strengthen that forward line."

Who should United sign?

Out of the above names, Aubameyang looks to be the best option. He obviously had some problems at Arsenal, losing the captaincy before his departure to Barcelona, but he would bring goals to Old Trafford.

He has already proven himself in English football's top division, scoring 68 goals in 128 appearances during his time in north London.

Again, given how his spell at the Emirates ended, it is understandable if some at United had doubts about the 33-year-old. That being said, if Ten Hag desperately wants a new forward and his options are Aubameyang, Morata and Icardi, then it is hard to look past the former Gabon international.

Icardi does not come without his own controversy, previously angering the Inter Milan ultras, for example, while Morata is not the most prolific No.9. During his stint in England, he managed just 24 goals in 72 outings.

In an ideal world, United would have ended up with Erling Haaland or Darwin Nunez, but they are gone now, so the Red Devils can now only sign the next best thing. And looking at what is currently out there, that is probably Aubameyang.
