Manchester United endured one of the darkest days in their Premier League history on Saturday evening when they were battered 4-0 by Brentford.

The clash at the Brentford Community Stadium was essentially all over after 35 minutes. Goals from Josh Dasilva, Mathias Jensen, Ben Mee and Bryan Mbeumo fired the Bees into a four-goal lead before the break, as Erik ten Hag's United were completely overwhelmed.

Despite the game being long dead by half-time, the Dutchman had to at least try and revive his side's fortunes in the second period.

To that end, Ten Hag pulled the trigger on a triple change at the break, including sending Scott McTominay on in place of Fred in midfield.

United had barely been able to string a meaningful pass together in the opening 45 minutes and struggled to hit their stride in the second half as well.

While the Red Devils managed to avoid any further damage in terms of the scoreline, the second period won't have given United fans much cause for optimism ahead of the visit of Liverpool next Monday.

A nightmare 90 minutes for the 13-time Premier League champions was summed up by a truly dreadful passage of play in injury time - which has since gone viral.

From a United throw-in, Cristiano Ronaldo seemingly almost falls over while trying to control the ball. After finally bringing it under his spell, the Portuguese legend lays the ball back to McTominay.

For a few moments, McTominay looks lost, unsure of whether to pass the ball or have a shot at goal. As it turned out, anything would have been better than the option he chose.

Blasting the ball into a completely vacant area of the pitch, none of McTominay's colleagues had any hope of receiving the ball as it sailed out of play for a Brentford throw-in.

The damage was done for United long before McTominay was introduced to the action. After United's dire first-half, nothing was bringing them back into contention, but there's no getting around the fact that this was an absolute shocker.
