The 14th of August, 2022, was one of the darkest days in Manchester United‘s modern history.
In Erik ten Hag’s second league match in charge since arriving from Ajax this summer, the Red Devils were thrashed 4-0 by Brentford.
United went into the game knowing that only a win would suffice after suffering a 2-1 home defeat to Brighton in their opening match of 2022/23, but things certainly didn’t go to plan in the English capital.
Brentford were actually 4-0 up in the 35th minute of proceedings thanks to goals from Josh Dasilva, Mathias Jensen, Ben Mee and Bryan Mbeumo.
Thomas Frank’s side took full advantage of some hopeless defending from United, with recent arrival Lisandro Martinez and Luke Shaw both hooked at half-time by Ten Hag.
Things got even bleaker for the Red Devils after the full-time whistle was blown as well.
Instead of going over to applaud the supporters who’d made the long journey to the Gtech Community Stadium, a fuming Cristiano Ronaldo stormed off the pitch and ignored Steve McClaren in the process.
Ronaldo knowingly wants out of United due to the fact that the team is not in the Champions League this season.
His future has been a hot topic of debate for months now and there’s now been a major update on the saga after the humbling defeat to Brentford.

Feeling that the situation with Ronaldo is coming to a head. Either he is going to have to change his attitude and body language or Manchester United will have to terminate his contract. Can’t go on like this. No one in the dressing room is challenging him because of his status.— Kaveh Solhekol (@SkyKaveh) August 14, 2022

The Portuguese superstar has just one-year remaining on his current deal and you now feel it would be best for both parties if his relationship with United came to an end as soon as possible.
There’s no denying the 37-year-old is still one of the best footballers in the world, as he proved last season when he bagged 24 goals across all club competitions.
But it’s clear his current situation is impacting both him and United negatively. The longer it continues, the more damage that will be done.
Where could Ronaldo go?
The former Real Madrid man has been linked with many members of Europe’s elite this summer, although nothing substantial has really materialised as of yet.
According to Tancredi Palmeri, Ronaldo was recently offered to both AC Milan and Inter Milan, however, the Italian giants have rejected him.
