Newcastle 'won't rush' into new signings at St James' Park

Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe watches on

Newcastle United will not rush into bringing in further reinforcements unless head coach Eddie Howe feels the target is the right fit for his St James’ Park squad, according to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie.

The Magpies have made an unbeaten start to the campaign – having followed up their opening day win over Nottingham Forest by drawing at Brighton & Hove Albion – and Howe has until September 1 to welcome fresh faces to Tyneside.

Who have Newcastle been linked with?

According to The Sun, Newcastle have made Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher their number one transfer target with the deadline looming.

The report suggests the Magpies have stepped up their efforts to sign the £40million-rated star who spent last season on loan with Crystal Palace.

James Maddison is also on Newcastle’s radar and they have seen two bids, with the latest being worth £50million, rejected by Leicester City.

According to Portuguese media outlet O Jogo, via the Express, Howe has set his sights on bolstering his attacking options with Goncalo Ramos, but Benfica are demanding just shy of £35million for their frontman.

Newcastle lodged a bid for Leeds United winger Jack Harrison earlier in the window, but it was turned down and deemed ‘derisory’ by the Whites.

What has Keith Downie said about the situation?

Downie is confident that Newcastle chief Howe will not panic buy during the final weeks of the summer transfer window.

The Sky Sports reporter feels targets will have to meet certain criteria before the Magpies will even contemplate heading to the negotiating table.

When asked about the possibility of Harrison heading to St James’ Park, Downie told GIVEMESPORT: “When you look at Leeds, they have lost Raphinha and Kalvin Phillips, so they have already lost their biggest players. It’s probably going to be even harder to do business with them.

“From some of the pieces I’ve heard, I just don’t think Newcastle are going to rush and take someone for the sake of it.

“I think it needs to be the right sort of character and the right sort of player who is going to come in and augment the squad they’ve got at the moment.”

Who have Newcastle signed so far?

Having spent the second half of last season on loan with Newcastle, Matt Targett completed a permanent switch to Tyneside thanks to a £15million agreement being reached with Aston Villa.

Howe followed up that deal by bringing in a new first choice goalkeeper in the form of Nick Pope, who cost £10million as he made the switch from Burnley.

Sven Botman became the latest of the Magpies’ recruits after sealing a £35million transfer from French outfit Lille.
