A moment from Brentford's 4-0 battering of Manchester United is doing the rounds on Twitter - and it shows such carelessness on the part of Anthony Elanga.

The young Swedish star was grabbing the headlines over summer as impressive training videos emerged showing him putting in the hard graft.

So far this season, though, the 20-year-old has failed to reap the fruits of his labour on the pitch and is yet to start a competitive game under Erik ten Hag - what happened at the weekend will do little to change that.

Elanga's moment of madness

United getting embarrassed at the hands of Brentford meant that much of the media backlash was always going to be focussed towards Ten Hag and the starting crop of players.

However, a video that's emerged on social media shows that the incompetence went far beyond the starting eleven on Saturday.

The footage shows Elanga warming up on the sidelines in the 47th minute of play.

With United already losing 4-0 by this point, it's clear Ten Hag would have wanted an emphatic response from his team to kick-off the second half in the right manner.

Yet, with an unsatisfied Brentford side still determined to inflict damage, the rampant Bees were on the charge again and looked to be on a threatening counter-attack.

Fortunately for United, Raphael Varane managed to block Bryan Mbuemo's pass and send the ball out for a throw-in.

But then in a moment of sheer thoughtlessness, Elanga decided to spring into action and quickly grab the ball in order to throw it back to Mbuemo.

The Brentford man continued to take a quick throw-in to his teammate Rico Henry, who then capitalised on the wandering United defenders and got into a dangerous position to cross the ball.

Elanga's incredibly fortunate that nothing came from that piece of Brentford play otherwise he'd have been left with some very rosy cheeks indeed.

But the crazy incident just sums up where United are at right now - by comparison there is simply no way you'd see a Man City or Liverpool player helping the opposition in that way.

Understandably, United fans have been furious when seeing the moment back and have been voicing their displeasure on Twitter.
