NFL Network reporter Peter Schrager has claimed that a move by the New York Jets to bring in Jimmy Garoppolo might not be the best move.

The New York Jets suffered a scare this past weekend during their preseason encounter with the Philadelphia Eagles when quarterback Zach Wilson went down with a knee injury that had everyone fearful that he might have torn his ACL and that he would be done for the year.

Such a move might have needed the Jets to reach out and bring in a quarterback from outside the organisation, if they didn’t feel like they could rely on what they had already in the form of Joe Flacco, Mike White or Chris Streveler. One such man could have been Jimmy Garoppolo, with the San Francisco 49ers man still looking for a team that will take him on after being ostracised by his current employers.

However, with Wilson now appearing to have only a bone bruise and a meniscus tear that will keep him out for a couple of weeks rather than potentially the whole year, the thought process could very well have changed about what they intend to do under centre.

A missed opportunity?

A move for Garoppolo might have made a lot of sense on the surface. With Jets head coach Robert Saleh having been the defensive coordinator with the 49ers whilst Garoppolo was there, and current offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur being the 49ers’ passing game coordinator, there would have been a lot of familiarity on both sides so that it wasn’t a massive leap for Garoppolo to make.

And with the Jets looking as if they’re turning into a ‘win now’ kind of team, demonstrated by their desire to trade back in and make a 3rd pick in the first round of the NFL Draft this year, to bring in a quarterback with experience and the knowledge of how to get to a Super Bowl (both with the 49ers as a starter and the New England Patriots as a backup), then he could have been invaluable to them for the year.

However, Peter Schrager believes that making a move for Garoppolo might not be the one for the Jets to make.

What’s he said?

Speaking on Good Morning Football, Schrager pointed out why a move for Garoppolo might look like it makes sense on paper, but pointed out that there are a number of other factors to consider that mean Jets fans shouldn’t be rushing to get new Garoppolo jerseys just yet:

So it looks like Garoppolo’s window to get a new job might have closed pretty much as soon as it opened. Which begs the question, when, if ever, is he going to get that chance and who is going to give it to him?
