Tottenham: £60m 'luxury player' would be 'great option' at Hotspur Way

Tottenham Hotspur head coach Antonio Conte applauding

Tottenham Hotspur head coach Antonio Conte will secure a ‘great option’ if Leicester City are persuaded into letting James Maddison head to Hotspur Way, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

Spurs maintained their unbeaten start to the season thanks to Harry Kane’s stoppage time leveller at Chelsea on Sunday, but Conte could bolster his squad ahead of the September 1 deadline.

What’s the latest news involving Maddison?

It is understood that Tottenham are ‘very seriously considering’ making a move for Maddison ahead of the transfer window slamming shut.

The attacking midfielder has entered the final two years of his £110,000-per-week contract at Leicester, but his current club’s financial situation could allow Spurs to strike a deal.

That is because the Foxes have lost £120million over the past three seasons and are in danger of breaching Financial Fair Play regulations.

However, Tottenham are not Maddison’s only suitors as Newcastle United have had two bids – with the latest being worth £50million – rejected.

Although Leicester are keen to retain Maddison’s services, they are reportedly willing to cash-in if the £60million price tag they have set is met.

What has Dean Jones said about Maddison?

Jones is aware that Kane is more than happy to drop into midfield to get on the ball and create chances for his team-mates, but he feels Maddison would be a shrewd addition to Spurs’ squad.

The journalist understands the north Londoners have been mulling over whether to add an attacking midfielder to their ranks.

When asked whether Spurs need a creative spark in the middle of the park, Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “I think Kane loves doing that now anyway, so I think Kane kind of wants to do that rather than being an out-and-out striker. It’s difficult to judge on that one.

“We do have to consider whether Tottenham will go for that luxury player that they have been weighing up. If they do, James Maddison seems like a great option.”

Would Maddison be a good signing for Spurs?

Spurs have already spent big since the transfer window reopened, having parted with close to £100million, but splashing out on Maddison could pay off.

The 25-year-old boasts plenty of Premier League experience and has registered 60 goal contributions in the competition.

Maddison has already shown that he means business this season, having found the back of the net and recorded another assist in Leicester’s first two matches.

It is clear that the one-cap England international would add another attacking dimension to Conte’s side.
