Leeds 'looking at' exciting move for 56-cap EUROs winner at Elland Road

Leeds United head coach Jesse Marsch applauds the fans

Leeds United are looking at Borussia Dortmund’s Raphael Guerreiro and other left-backs, claims transfer insider Dean Jones.

The 28-year-old has been linked with a move to Manchester City, but it appears that Leeds are also eyeing the player and a potential coup.

What is the latest news involving Guerreiro?

Sky Sports recently reported that City are keen on signing Guerreiro. It comes after the Premier League champions missed out on Marc Cucurella, who left Brighton for Chelsea earlier this month.

Since then, City have bought Sergio Gomez, with manager Pep Guardiola saying he expects the Spaniard to remain a part of his squad for the season.

Considering that, the Citizens may opt against bringing in another left-back like Guerreiro, which would come as a huge boost to Leeds and other potential suitors.

The Euro 2016 winner made 28 appearances for Dortmund last term, with 23 of those coming in the Bundesliga.

What has Jones said about Guerreiro and Leeds?

Jones has told GIVEMESPORT that Guerreiro is just one left-back who Leeds and Jesse Marsch are currently considering.

Speaking to GMS, the journalist said: “Raphael Guerreiro’s a name I’ve heard mentioned. There are a few that they’re looking at. It might be that they end up doing a loan or something from one of Europe’s bigger clubs once they know that there are people that don’t fit into the plans elsewhere.”

Would Guerreiro be a good signing for Leeds?

Undoubtedly. Leeds probably need a new left-back, with Junior Firpo picking up injuries during the 2021/22 campaign, and Guerreiro is arguably one of the best in the world, or at least when going forward.

In his club career, he has scored 45 goals, which is pretty impressive for a player in his position.

Do you know this obscure Leeds footballer from the 1990s?

Over the last year, the 56-cap Portugal international has also ranked in the 89th percentile for shot-creating actions, the 98th for progressive passes and the 85th for progressive carries among full-backs (via FBref), showing further the kind of attacking threat he brings to the pitch.

Ultimately, if Leeds can pull this off, it would be an exceptional signing. You would suspect, though, that if Dortmund do make Guerreiro available for transfer, there will be a lot of other clubs after his signature.

Fortunately for the Elland Road outfit, that may not include City, who may be content with Joao Cancelo and Gomez as their left-back options, while it is a position that Nathan Ake can also play.
