Wolverhampton Wanderers could be thwarted in their attempts to tie Ruben Neves down to a new Molineux contract as agent Jorge Mendes 'has other plans', according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

The West Midlands outfit have spent more than £66million on acquiring fresh faces during the summer window, but there could be a high-profile exit ahead of the September 1 deadline.

What's the latest news involving Neves?

Wolves head coach Bruno Lage has revealed that new contract talks have been opened with central midfielder Neves.

The 25-year-old has entered the final two years of his deal as the current agreement, which is worth £50,000-per-week, is due to expire in the summer of 2024.

It appears that Lage is pushing Wolves to offer Neves a major wage increase by tabling a contract which would see the Portuguese earn £100,000 every seven days.

Lage is known to be a huge fan of the former Porto man, who became the club-record signing when he joined for £15.8million five years ago, and has previously claimed that his fellow countryman is worth £100million.

However, it is understood that Wolves have placed a price tag on Neves which is worth less than that figure, with the Molineux-based outfit demanding £70million as they look to deter suitors.

What has Dean Jones said about Neves?

Jones understands that Neves' agent Mendes has set his sights on securing his client a move away from Wolves.

As a result, the transfer insider is expecting the West Midlands side to be frustrated in their attempts to get the 30-cap Portugal international to agree fresh terms and put pen-to-paper.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: "I think Jorge Mendes has other plans for him, to be honest.

"I'd be very surprised if they tied him down to a longer deal."

Has Neves been linked with a move away from Molineux?

It is understood that Neves has been lined up as an alternative option if Manchester United fail to sign Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong.

The Red Devils reached a £63million agreement with the La Liga giants last month, but a move has not come to fruition and the offer has expired, meaning they will need to reopen negotiations.

However, de Jong would prefer to join Chelsea, heightening the prospects of Manchester United testing Wolves' resolve over Neves.

Despite that, there is reportedly confidence that the midfielder will still be at Molineux by the time the transfer window slams shut.
