Arsenal could need ‘one or two’ more signings to seriously challenge for the top four this season, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

Mikel Arteta has overseen a busy few months of business at the Emirates but could still add more names to his squad ahead of the September 1 deadline.

What have Arsenal been up to this summer?

The Gunners moved quickly to secure their top targets in the transfer window. Gabriel Jesus, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Fabio Vieira, Matt Turner and Marquinhos have all arrived, with the latest deal completed by the end of July.

In terms of outgoings, nine first-team stars have departed, with Matteo Guendouzi, Lucas Torreira and Bernd Leno among those to leave on either permanent or loan deals as Arteta and Edu look to offload some fringe talent.

It remains to be seen whether or not Arsenal will strengthen further ahead of the deadline, having made a strong start to the Premier League season.

The Gunners followed up a 2-0 opening-day win over Crystal Palace with a 4-2 victory against Leicester City at the Emirates, leaving them second in the table.

What has Jones said about Arsenal business?

Jones believes that Arsenal could be one or two signings short of ensuring their place in the top four, with strength in depth still an issue.

When asked about their strong start to the season, the transfer insider told GIVEMESPORT: “It just shows the benefits of getting your business done early and having a full pre-season with your first-choice XI.

"One or two more signings gives Arsenal real depth that they still need. I mean, their starting XI is pretty much as good as almost anyone in this league at the moment. But those extra signings would seriously put them in the conversation for the top four. I think it's too soon to consider them going any higher than that.”

Where could Arsenal still strengthen?

It appears that if the north Londoners are to bring in two more signings, they will be in midfield and out wide.

The Gunners were in the race to sign Leeds winger Raphinha before his move to Barcelona, hinting at a desire to strengthen on the wings, while Leicester’s Youri Tielemans has been a long-term target too.

Meanwhile, Arsenal are set to battle Manchester United for the signature of Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo, according to The Mirror.

PSV Eindhoven winger Cody Gakpo has also been linked with a departure this summer with the Gunners and the Red Devils both interested once again.
