Tottenham Hotspur have been ‘lurking’ in pursuit of Manchester United midfielder James Garner, with the Red Devils now open to offers at Old Trafford, according to talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook.

Antonio Conte has overseen a busy summer of business at Hotspur Way as he prepares his side for the return of Champions League football this season.

What is the latest on Garner?

The Athletic have reported that United are now open to permanent offers for the 21-year-old midfielder after he returned from a spell on loan with Nottingham Forest.

The publication claims that Garner could be available for as little as £14 million despite still having two years remaining on his contract. It also states that Everton, Southampton and Leeds have all been among the teams to show an interest, potentially providing rivalry to Tottenham.

United are continuing negotiations with Juventus midfielder Adrien Rabiot and retain hopes of signing Barcelona’s Frenkie De Jong.

If both deals were to go through, it would leave Garner down the pecking order and unlikely to get any game time under Erik ten Hag.

What has Crook said on a deal?

Crook understands that Tottenham have been monitoring Garner’s situation.

However, he adds that those close to the player do not see a move to north London materialising this summer.

Crook told GIVEMESPORT: “Tottenham have been lurking but I don't think his camp expects that to happen now.”

Would Garner be a good signing for Arsenal?

There is no doubt that, at £14 million, it would be a smart investment for Tottenham to make.

They have added Yves Bissouma to their midfield this summer but Garner would be an exciting prospect for the future and one who is only likely to increase in value.

He made 41 appearances for Forest last season in the Championship, scoring four goals and providing 10 assists, as they were promoted back to the Premier League and Steve Cooper showered him with praise towards the end of the campaign.

“He has been excellent,” Cooper told the Athletic back in March. “Over recent months he has been a high-performing player in the team. He has been a constant selection for us.”

Previous reports have stated that Conte would like to add a creative presence to midfield and it will be interesting to see if he thinks Garner matches that description.

The Italian has already added six new faces to his side this summer but with time still remaining in the transfer window, there could be more to come.
