Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard wants to sign a defender before the window closes, according to talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook.

The Midlands outfit secured their first victory of the Premier League season against Everton, but the win came at a cost, with summer signing Diego Carlos suffering an injury which could keep him out of action for several months.

What happened to Carlos?

It looked like being the perfect first home game for Gerrard after goals from Danny Ings and Emiliano Buendia meant that Lucas Digne's late own goal was nothing more than a consolation.

But disaster struck late into added-time as Carlos, who cost £26m from Sevilla earlier this summer, was forced off and replaced by Calum Chambers.

The severity only became clear 48 hours after the game, though, once the Brazilian had undergone scans on the problem.

And while Villa didn't confirm how long Carlos will spend on the sidelines, the fact he requires surgery suggests that it'll be a matter of months and not weeks.

Carlos' setback leaves Gerrard with a potential lack of centre backs heading into the final few weeks of the window and Crook reckons the Villa boss could dip back into the market before 1 September.

He told GIVEMESPORT: "I think he wants to [bring in another defender]. He doesn't have a great deal of faith in Kourtney Hause as a backup option and there's obviously the ongoing issue with Tyrone Mings.

"I know he played last weekend but there's been a fall out with manager and former captain."

What are Gerrard's current centre back options?

Carlos' injury is a setback in more ways than one for Gerrard, not only because he's arguably their best defender, but he has potential issues regarding each of his other centre backs.

Mings has generally been a regular under his guidance, but he was stripped of the captaincy and then dropped for the opening day defeat at Bournemouth.

He did return against Everton at the expense of Ezri Konsa, meaning after Saturday's trip to Crystal Palace, none of Gerrard's centre defenders would have started each of their first three fixtures.

Beyond Mings and Konsa, he has Chambers, who enjoyed a productive spell following his January move from Arsenal and Hause, who hasn't played for more than six months due to injury.

With that in mind, bolstering his central defensive department might be a wise decision.
