The report claims that Gakpo, who has just enjoyed his best season to date, is valued at £35m and seen as an alternative to Ajax star Antony, who the Old Trafford club have also been keen on.

Despite intense speculation surrounding his future, PSV manager and ex-United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy denied claims that Gakpo will leave before 1 September's deadline.

"For me, Cody is a player that is ours," he said, when speaking ahead of PSV's game against Rangers in the Champions League on Tuesday.

"As long as there are no other news then he is ours. He is preparing for the game, as our squad are, and I am too. I have to say because we are playing so many games and going from one game to another, we travel, that is the focus that I have, and our players have."

What did Romano say about Gakpo?

Romano revealed that Ten Hag is a fan of the young winger and stated that United are discussing a potential fee for the Netherlands international.

He told GIVEMESPORT: "He's another player who Ten Hag appreciates, he's doing great in Eredivisie, he's an important player for PSV.

"So, they're trying to understand how much he would cost, but he's one of the players on their list."

How many goals did Gakpo score last season?

Gakpo's goal return has been improving year after year, with the 2021-2022 campaign his best to date.

In Eredivisie alone, he scored 12 goals in 27 appearances, while he also chipped in with 13 assists.

Factoring in his strikes in all three European competitions and the domestic cups, Gakpo ended the season with 21 goals in 47 games, taking his overall record for the Dutch giants to 45.

To put that into context, United's wide department of Anthony Elanga, Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho managed just 12 goals between them, while Cristiano Ronaldo (24) was the only player in the United squad that outscored Gakpo last season.
