Jumping from 25,000 feet would terrify the large majority of people, and rightly so. Approximately 3-6% of the population are known to have a fear of heights and, even if you don’t, heights can still be unpleasant. Extreme sports are there for the adrenaline junkies of the world, but there’s a reason only one man has attempted this stunt before.Luke Aikins is an American who regularly partakes in insane activities. He’s a professional skydiver, base jumper, pilot and aerial photographer, whose photos have been published in many major magazines and newspapers. He began skydiving at age 12 and has completed more than 18,000 jumps in his life so far. Unsurprisingly with a hobby like his, he was also used as a stuntman in movies. He even featured in Marvel’s ‘Iron Man 3’.Yet, in 2016, he attempted something never done before. He became the first man to jump from an aircraft without a parachute or wing suit at 25,000 feet.

The stunt was one of a kind and attracted national attention. It was broadcast on Fox television and was given the title ‘Heaven Sent’ due to the sheer height of the jump.

Obviously safety is a concern in this situation, even for daredevils. It’s even more important when an event like this is being live-streamed on TV.

As a safety precaution, Aikins was advised to wear a parachute, although the American was unable to do so since it would add unnecessary weight to his landing.

Thankfully, everything went according to plan and he landed safely into a net made from Spectra. It had a high-density polythene cord and four compressed air cylinders with the aim of slowing him down on impact.

Luke was able to reunite with his wife and young son following the successful jump, which has been re-shared on Twitter by @shannonsharpeee.

The fall saw him reach a terminal velocity of 120 miles per hour, which is a truly stunning feat unlikely to be repeated by anyone again.
