Everton target Ben Brereton Diaz would be a ‘sensible, shrewd purchase’ if he arrives at the club, according to journalist Jacque Talbot.

The Toffees are believed to be in the market for attacking reinforcements after losing Richarlison to Tottenham Hotspur in a £60 million deal earlier in the summer.

What is the latest news involving Brereton Diaz?

A recent report from The Sun has claimed that several sides are eager to prise Brereton Diaz away from Blackburn Rovers before September’s deadline.

It’s believed that Sevilla, Real Betis, Valencia, Leeds United, Bournemouth and Everton are all interested in snapping up the Chile international, although his £20m price tag may prove prohibitive.

And Ligue 1 outfit Nice have already seen an £8.4m offer rejected by Rovers after it fell well below their asking price, opening the door to his other potential suitors.

Brereton Diaz only has 12 months remaining on his current contract at Ewood Park, though, and Everton and co. may be hopeful of pulling off a cut-price deal as deadline day fast approaches.

What has Talbot said about Brereton Diaz?

Talbot told GiveMeSport: “He was very good for Blackburn in the first half of last season when they were in that promotion place, and then he got injured, and the team fell off entirely.

“They got him down to a new contract in May, but they activated a one-year extension, but I think that's with a view to eventually moving.

“I think they turned down some offers last season for him as well, halfway through the season there.

“But I think he's a good player, and he seems within Everton’s sort of repertoire I feel, so it will be a sensible, shrewd purchase. I think he's very good. That's very possible.”

Would Brereton Diaz be a good signing?

Brereton Diaz enjoyed the most productive season of his career so far last term, registering 22 goals and three assists in 37 Championship appearances.

And the 23-year-old has started 2022/23 in equally as impressive fashion, finding the back of the net on two occasions in his opening four league games, setting up one further strike.

At present, Everton are desperately short of options up front as star striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin is sidelined with yet another injury setback.

That has forced winger Anthony Gordon to play through the middle, and Frank Lampard would surely welcome the arrival of Brereton Diaz on Merseyside with open arms.
