Southampton "definitely want to strengthen" forward area at St Mary's

Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl

Southampton could sign two more players in order to bolster their attacking options ahead of the transfer deadline, according to talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook.

Ralph Hasenhuttl has overseen a busy few months at St Mary’s but could still look to strengthen his squad ahead of the window closing on September 1.

What is the latest transfer news from Southampton?

Benfica striker Goncalo Ramos has emerged as a target for the Saints, with The Athletic reporting that talks have been held with the Portuguese giants over a £25 million move.

The outlet claims that a meeting was held after Benfica beat Midtjylland in their third Champions League qualifying round regarding a potential transfer.

If they succeed with their £25 million offer, Ramos will become their new record signing, surpassing the £20 million paid for Danny Ings in 2019.

However, Newcastle are also understood to be targeting the 21-year-old this summer as they too look to bolster their own attack.

Elsewhere, transfer insider Dean Jones has previously told GiveMeSport that Southampton could still go back in for Armando Broja, following his impressive loan spell last term.

What has Crook said on the club’s business?

Crook understands that Southampton are looking to bring in one or two more players before the window closes.

He adds that the Saints are focusing on adding some more quality to the final third.

When asked how much more business can be expected at Southampton, Crook told GIVEMESPORT: “Probably one to two I’d have thought. They definitely want to strengthen in the forward area.”

What have Southampton been up to this summer?

It has been a slow start to the season for Southampton, suffering a heavy defeat to Tottenham on the opening day before being held to a draw at home by Leeds.

But the club have busied themselves in the transfer market in preparation for the 2022-23 campaign.

Six new signings have been made at St Mary’s, all of them permanent deals, with over £50 million splashed so far.

Joe Aribo and Romeo Lavia have been signed from Rangers and Manchester City respectively to add some much-needed depth to the midfield.

Meanwhile Mateusz Lis and Gavin Bazunu have arrived to compete for the goalkeeper spot after both Fraser Forster and Harry Lewis left on free transfers.

Centre-back Armel Bella-Kotchap has committed to life on the south coast following his move from Bochum.

Sekou Mara signed from Bordeaux and the 19-year-old made an instant impact from the bench against Leeds on Saturday, providing a wonderful assist for Kyle Walker-Peters’ equaliser.
