Kansas City Current star Lo'eau LaBonta has gone viral for her unconventional celebration against Angel City in the NWSL. Trailing 1-0 at home to City with 10 minutes remaining, LaBonta converted a penalty to rescue a draw and help Kansas climb to third in the league. At first, it appeared as though LaBonta had injured herself after scoring from the spot, as she limped away while clutching her hamstring. Yet, the whole thing proved to be a joke as LaBonta stopped pretending to hobble and started twerking out of nowhere. Check out the crazy celebration below.

Where did the celebration come from?

LaBonta’s hilarious ruse has sent fans wild but it’s not the first time it’s been done.

Indeed, fellow US football star Antonee Robinson pulled off a similar celebration earlier this year while playing for the national team.

The Fulham defender scored his second international goal against El Salvador and immediately proceed to do a cartwheel and back flip, before pretending to grab his hamstring.

Speaking afterwards, Robinson explained the celebration.

“A few years ago when I was at Everton a kid did the same celebration against us and my best friend’s been saying to me for weeks ‘you’ve got to do it,’ and every time I score he’s like ‘why didn’t you do it?’ So I pulled it out.”

You can see Robinson’s acting skills below.

Who is LaBonta?

LaBonta was the 37th overall pick in the 2015 NWSL draft and joined Sky Blue FC from Stamford.

However, she was waived after just six appearances to make room on the roster for players returning from the 2015 Women’s World Cup.

After spells at Kansas City, Western Sydney Wanderers and Utah Royals, she returned to Kansas to sign for Current in 2021.

So far this season, the 29-year-old has five goals and four assists –– making her Kansas’ top scorer.

Interestingly, all of LaBonta’s goals have been penalties but her contributions all over the pitch have still been invaluable.

The US star is still yet to make an appearance for the national team, though she was capped by the U23s

This is Kansas’ second season in the NWSL after joining as an expansion team in 2021.

Last season, the team finished bottom of the league and won just three matches all year.

However, the side is much improved this season and are currently just two points behind league leaders Portland Thorns.
