West Ham could target defensive midfielder 'in late stages' at London Stadium

West Ham United boss David Moyes acknowledges the supporters

West Ham United may make a move for a defensive midfielder before the transfer window closes, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

David Moyes currently has three senior midfielders at his disposal at the time of writing, with the club being potentially short in depth in midfield.

What’s the latest on West Ham?

The Hammers have added five new players to their squad so far this summer, as well as making Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Alphonse Areola’s initial loan move into a permanent deal.

The most significant signing for Moyes this summer has arguably been that of Sassuolo and Italy striker Gianluca Scamacca, who arrived at the London Stadium in a £30.5m deal, with the club finally having an out-and-out striker to play in the centre-forward role for Moyes this season.

In terms of midfielders, the club have welcomed Swansea City man Flynn Downes for a reported £12m, meaning that Moyes now has an option in the middle of the park behind Declan Rice and Tomáš Souček.

The club had also been looking to strike a deal for Lille and Belgium midfielder Amadou Onana, but the 20-year-old ended up making the move to fellow Premier League side Everton for £33m instead.

And Jones believes that Moyes and GSB will be looking to recruit another midfielder at the London Stadium this summer, with the club intending to compete on both a domestic and Europa Conference League front this season.

What has Jones said about West Ham?

He told GIVEMESPORT: “Midfield does look short for me for West Ham.

“So, I think that we might even end up seeing a defensive midfielder being looked at as well in the late stages.”

Will West Ham sign a defensive midfielder?

Having already failed in their pursuit of Onana, it would come as no surprise if West Ham attempted to sign another defensive midfielder before the transfer window closes on 1st September.

According to talkSPORT, the Irons are eyeing up a move for Manchester United and Scotland midfielder Scott McTominay, following Real Madrid and Brazil midfielder Casemiro’s impending arrival at Old Trafford.

This would again suggest that the club are in the market for a defensive midfielder this summer, something that Moyes will be absolutely desperate for, with the club likely to be playing an excessive amount of fixtures this season due to the club’s European excursions.

Therefore, it seems likely that Jones is correct in that before the September deadline, we could see another midfielder coming through the doors at the London Stadium.
