Leeds United are ‘looking at’ FC Zurich striker Wilfried Gnonto to solve their attacking woes this summer, according to Daily Express journalist Ryan Taylor.

The highly-rated 18-year-old has been linked with a surprise move to Elland Road in recent weeks following a breakout season in 2021/22 that resulted in a call-up to the senior Italian national side.

What is the latest news involving Gnonto?

Reliable Sky Sports Italy reporter Gianluca Di Marzio has recently revealed that Leeds are eager to snap up Gnonto in order to provide cover and competition for Patrick Bamford, claiming they have a ‘strong interest’ in him.

It’s believed that the 5 foot 7 ace has a price tag between €4 million (£3.3m) and €5m (£4.25m), which could tempt the west Yorkshire outfit into making a move before September’s deadline.

Gnonto rose through the ranks of boyhood club Inter Milan before departing for Zurich back in 2020 without making a senior appearance as he went in search of regular game time.

And the teenager’s bold decision to depart San Siro proved to be successful. Last season he registered 10 goals and five assists in 35 appearances across all competitions, firing his current employers to the Swiss league title.

What has Taylor said about Gnonto?

Leeds have used the money from Raphinha and Kalvin Phillips’ departures to revamp their first-team squad, and Taylor believes Gnonto is the next player on their wish list.

In an interview with GiveMeSport, he said: “The one that they're looking at is that Italian wonderkid, Wilfried Gnonto from Zurich.

“I haven't seen much of him, but from what I've read, he seems to be very highly rated because he's already played for the Italian national team, which is very unusual for a teenager that is playing in Switzerland and is not even in Serie A.

“So, that looks like the one they're trying to do for around about four or five million pounds. Whether he would be the answer to what they're looking for, I don't know.”

Who else could Leeds sign?

At the end of July, The Sun reported that Leeds were lining up a ‘surprise move’ for Southampton forward Che Adams.

The Athletic then disclosed after the Saints’ opening-day defeat that Ralph Hasenhuttl is prepared to sanction the Scotland international’s sale, although his recent performances may have changed that view.

Adams came off the bench against Leicester City last time out to bag a brace in Southampton’s 2-1 victory having not found the back of the net in the Premier League since February prior to that.

Only time will tell if Hasenhuttl is still willing to offload the creative talent, but Leeds would surely welcome his arrival at the club.
