Ian Wright’s eyebrow-raising comments about Liverpool and the Premier League have gone viral on social media.

The Arsenal legend was speaking on stage at the OTB Cadbury FC Roadshow when he praised Jurgen Klopp’s side for making English football’s top division interesting over the past few seasons.

Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City have won the Premier League title in four of the past five seasons, while Liverpool were crowned champions of England for the first time since 1990 at the end of the 2019-20 campaign.

Liverpool finished one point behind City in both the 2018-19 and 2021-22 seasons.

And the Reds are expected to be City’s closest challengers for the title once again this term.

Back-to-back draws against Fulham and Crystal Palace means it’s been an inauspicious start to the new season for Liverpool; however, victory over rivals Manchester United on Monday night would lift them back into the top half of the Premier League table.

What did Ian Wright say about Liverpool and the Premier League?

Wright, though, suggested the Premier League would currently be a dreadful spectacle if it wasn’t for Liverpool.

The retired striker-turned-pundit said: “I thought Fulham were amazing on the first [weekend], they put the pressure on Liverpool and the reason why they done that is because you know that Liverpool, who have chased down a Man City side that are imperious…

“Right, if it wasn’t for Liverpool this f***ing league should be s***.

“Simply because, City beat them on two occasions by one point, and then they hammered them out of sight.

“If it weren’t for Liverpool it would be a procession.”

Reaction to Wright's comments about Liverpool & Premier League

Wright was applauded by the audience and it seems that many people on social media are in agreement with his comments:

City have been remarkably consistent under Guardiola who, alongside Klopp, is widely regarded as the best manager in world football right now.

They remain the team to beat and Liverpool unquestionably deserve huge credit for pushing them so hard over the past four or five seasons.
