Arsenal: 'Intermediaries working hard' on deal for £72m star at the Emirates

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta passes instructions onto his players

Arsenal are looking to offload Nicolas Pepe and ‘intermediaries have been working hard’ to secure the winger a move away from the Emirates Stadium, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

The Gunners maintained their 100 per cent winning start to the season by overcoming Bournemouth at the weekend, but boss Mikel Arteta could sanction Pepe’s departure ahead of the September 1 deadline.

What’s the latest news involving Pepe?

According to The Athletic, Arsenal are in talks with Ligue 1 side Nice over a loan move for Pepe.

The report suggests the Gunners have made signing a wide-man their primary focus between now and the closure of the window, but that may only be possible if Pepe – who cost a club-record £72million three years ago – heads out of the exit door.

The 27-year-old was left out of Arsenal’s matchday squad for the win over newly-promoted Bournemouth while discussions over a temporary switch to Nice continue.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has revealed that negotiations between Arsenal and the French outfit are ongoing but, despite rumours, Sevilla have not submitted a proposal.

Although Pepe’s £140,000-per-week contract is not due to expire until the summer of 2024, it is understood that he has been told to find a new club.

What has Dean Jones said about Pepe?

Jones understands that plenty of work is being done behind the scenes as Arsenal look to offload Pepe on a temporary basis.

The transfer insider believes the north Londoners are hoping for other suitors to challenge Nice for the winger’s services, but Pepe is interested in heading back to France.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “Intermediaries have been working hard to find a new club for Pepe. Nice are at the door but, ideally, they wanted other clubs in for him too.

“It is clear he is not in Arteta’s plans and this transfer has not worked out at all.

“He’ll be able to rebuild his confidence and form in Ligue 1, so he’s pretty open to it.”

How has Pepe performed for Arsenal?

Pepe has scored 27 goals and registered a further 21 assists in 112 appearances since joining Arsenal from Lille.

However, the 30-cap Ivory Coast international has not found the back of the net since February, which underlines the fact that he has struggled to make a consistent impact in north London.

Pepe has failed to enjoy any game-time since the new campaign got underway, despite being named among the Gunners’ substitutes for the clashes with Crystal Palace and Leicester City, so now would be the right time to part ways.
