Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Trevoh Chalobah and could make a move for the Chelsea defender if Japhet Tanganga leaves Hotspur Way, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

Spurs head coach Antonio Conte has already bolstered his backline by acquiring Barcelona's Clement Lenglet on a season-long loan, but he may secure more fresh faces ahead of the September 1 deadline.

What's the latest news involving Chalobah?

According to The Athletic, Chelsea are prepared to sanction a loan move away from Stamford Bridge for Chalobah.

The report suggests the west Londoners are not prepared to allow the 23-year-old - who has been an unused substitute in all three of his current employers' fixtures so far this season - to leave permanently, so will not include an option or obligation to buy in any deal.

Tottenham, along with Italian giants Roma and Inter Milan, have shown an interest with the transfer deadline looming.

It is understood that Spurs' Premier League rivals Aston Villa are also monitoring developments after fellow central defender Diego Carlos ruptured his Achilles’ tendon earlier this month.

Chalobah has previously enjoyed loan spells with Ipswich Town, Huddersfield Town and Lorient, allowing him to take his number of senior appearances up to 142.

What has Dean Jones said about Chalobah?

Jones understands that Tottenham are in the market for a centre-half ahead of the transfer window slamming shut.

That is despite Spurs already spending close to £110million on reinforcements and enjoying an unbeaten start to the campaign.

The transfer insider believes Conte, who was appointed as the north Londoners' boss last November, has identified the position as a problem and is not afraid to hold negotiations over Chalobah with Chelsea.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: "They are in for a defender if Tanganga leaves and they see no real problem whose door they have to knock on. There is a small concern here over depth."

Is Tanganga likely to leave Spurs ahead of the deadline?

According to Italian media outlet Calciomercato, AC Milan have made another approach for Tottenham centre-back Tanganga.

However, the report suggests the Serie A outfit are not willing to meet Spurs' demands of a loan deal which includes an obligation to buy the 23-year-old, who has not made an appearance since the new season got underway, for £21.1million.

AC Milan initially opened talks over Tanganga last month, while newly-promoted Bournemouth have also shown an interest.

The academy product's £25,000-per-week contract is not due to expire until the summer of 2025, meaning Spurs are in a strong negotiating position.
