England and Manchester City icon Ellen White has announced her retirement from football with immediate effect.

The 33-year-old is the Lionesses' record goalscorer and helped England win Euro 2022 this summer.

White made her professional debut way back in 2005 and has enjoyed a glittering career playing for the likes of Notts County, Arsenal and Manchester City

Having decided to hang up her boots for good, GiveMeSport Women ranks the five most iconic moments of her career.

5. Goggles celebration

White has become famous for her goggles celebration that she adopted back in 2019.

Speaking about the celebration, White revealed she copied French striker Anthony Modeste, after watching him play for FC Köln in the Bundesliga.

“I like watching the Bundesliga. I support Cologne and striker Anthony Modeste, that’s his celebration,” she said.

“My husband was like, ‘why don’t you do that?’ But I’ve started something I can’t really stop now!

“We just love German football and went over there on a break and loved the atmosphere and the football.”

4. Winning the WSL

During the 2012 domestic season, White was a part of Arsenal’s ‘invincibles’ squad as they went on to secure an unbeaten league campaign.

Her season highlights included scoring a brace against Liverpool and an equaliser in the final game against Birmingham to ensure the Gunners maintained their unbeaten streak.

3. 100th England cap

In November 2021, White made her 100th international appearance for England against Austria.

The 33-year-old scored the winning goal in a 1-0 victory as the Lionesses maintained their 100 per cent winning run in qualification for the 2023 Women’s World Cup.

2. All-time top England scorer

The following game, White became England’s all-time record goalscorer after scoring three times in a crushing 20-0 win against Latvia

Wiegman’s side broke the record for the largest victory by an England side in an international match, with four players scoring hat-tricks in total.

White finishes her career with 52 England goals in total –– just one behind Wayne Rooney’s all-time England record.

1. Winning Euro 2022

Prior to this summer, White had competed in three World Cups and two European Championships for England to no avail.

However, the Lionesses legend finally secured major international silverware in front of a record European crowd at Wembley last month.

In many ways, it was fitting that White’s last competitive game was the most memorable and important of her career and lifting the Euro 2022 trophy was the perfect way to bow out.
