Manchester United took a surprise 1-0 lead against Liverpool in their Premier League clash at Old Trafford on Monday evening.

The Red Devils went into the match in dire straits.

They were rock bottom in the Premier League going into the game. They were beaten 2-1 by Brighton & Hove Albion in their opening match of the 2021/22 season, before being crushed 4-0 at Brentford.

Liverpool hadn't been firing on all cyclinders either, with draws against Fulham and Crystal Palace to start their campaign.

But, despite not being at their best, they still went into the match against their fierce rivals as the heavy favourites.

However, it was United who took the lead after a moment of magic by Jadon Sancho.

The English winger picked up the ball inside the box with all sorts of space.

James Milner came charging in and threw himself into the air in a desperate attempt to block Sancho's shot.

Sancho recognised Milner had committed himself and shifted the ball to the side, making Milner look silly. Alisson Becker was also deceived.

He then showed great composure to curl the ball beyond Alisson reach and into the corner of the net. Watch the goal below...

How cool was that from Sancho?! That was just his fourth Premier League goal for United and his first of the season.

To say Milner was not happy after the goal was an understatement.

He went absolutely mental at Virgil van Dijk as he made his feelings very known to the Dutch defender.

Milner was most probably not happy at Van Dijk for giving Sancho so much space inside the box.

Instead of pressuring Sancho, he continued to back away and was in his own six-yard box when Sancho struck his effort at goal.

Roy Keane was on punditry duty and he was critical of Van Dijk, saying he had to close Sancho down and accused Liverpool's centre-back of failing to move his feet.

United were well worth their lead and held on to their advantage for the remainder of the half.
