Erik ten Hag 'produced a tactical masterclass' as Manchester United beat Liverpool 2-1 on Monday night.

The Dutch manager's reign at Old Trafford had got off to a nightmare start after defeats to Brighton and Brentford in his opening two Premier League matches.

The 4-0 loss to Brentford had many fans and pundits questioning his managerial credentials after just a few months in charge of the club.

Last weekend, United were caught out by Brentford's high press on numerous occasions as they attempted to play the ball out from the back.

Facing one of the best pressing sides in world football next in Liverpool was far from ideal.

However, it seems that United learned their lesson and produced an incredible performance against Jurgen Klopp's side to take all three points.

How did they go from that wretched display against Brentford to dominating Liverpool in the space of nine days?

Well, a change of tactics certainly helped contribute to the transformation.

In terms of personnel, Ten Hag made four changes with Raphael Varane, Tyrell Malacia, Scott McTominay and Anthony Elanga coming in for club captain Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, Fred and Cristiano Ronaldo.

But it was the way United played that saw them beat Liverpool with performance analyst, EBL, declaring that Ten Hag 'produced a tactical masterclass.'

EBL has produced a short video that shows how David de Gea often played the ball long to beat the Liverpool press. United's front three were then tasked with challenging for the first ball while surrounding the play to pick up the second ball.

When Liverpool won the ball back, United revert to a 4-4-1-1 pressing formation.

The video really simplifies how Ten Hag "analysed the strengths & weaknesses of both teams & concluded that where United are weak (the build-up) is where Liverpool are strong (pressing high), so he removed that factor from the game."

Ten Hag talks about Man Utd's tactics vs Liverpool

It seems simple but it worked perfectly.

While Ten Hag acknowledged the change in tactics from the Brentford defeat, he believes his side's attitude made the biggest difference.

“We can talk about technical but it’s all about attitude," Ten Hag told Sky Sports after the match. "Now you see we bring the attitude. There was communication, there was a fighting spirit and especially there was a team, and you can see what they can achieve. Because they can play good football.

“I wanted a different approach to the Brentford game. This is why I am satisfied. We can play much better if we have more composure to make an extra pass. We have good players, but now we can be a team.”
