Douglas Luiz has one of the most random, but fascinating talents in world football.

Regularly ranked amongst the Premier League's finest defensive midfielders, the 24-year-old is now in his fourth season at Aston Villa and boy did he open his account for 2022/23 in style this week.

Luiz's position means that goals aren't exactly his priority whenever he takes to the pitch and just six strikes from over 100 appearances for the Villans does little to prove otherwise.

Bolton 1-4 Aston Villa

However, the Brazil international's sixth and most recent goal should frankly have counted as a hat-trick because it came in extraordinary circumstances against Bolton Wanderers on Tuesday.

Villa actually found themselves 1-0 down to the League One club when Dion Charles scored after 24 minutes, but Steven Gerrard's men eventually left the University of Bolton Stadium with a 4-1 triumph.

Goals from Danny Ings, Lucas Digne and Leon Bailey ultimately ensured the victory, but it was Luiz who got the Premier League side on level terms with what many refer to as an 'Olympic goal'.

For those less familiar with the unofficial terminology, that refers to the extremely rare situation where a player finds the back of the net directly from a corner.

Luiz scores a corner vs Bolton

Yes, that's right, the corner taker scoring a goal with one fell swoop of their boot from the quadrant without anybody getting a significant touch along the way that would see the scorer credited as someone else.

And while, yes, the likes of Roberto Carlos, David Beckham, Toni Kroos and Thierry Henry have all achieved the feat over the years, the simple fact of the matter is that you don't see Olympic goals every day.

So be sure to check out Luiz joining the club with his spectacular strike against Bolton, catching out Joel Dixon with a swooping right-footed delivery destined for the top corner, by watching the footage below:

Now that's what you call a stunning goal. Lovely jubbly.

And he almost scored another...

However, you're not just here for a one-off goal that a cynic could easily put down to chance because you started this article by reading our claim that Luiz has a special talent for this type of finish.

And we'll start our case by revealing that Luiz almost scored a second corner - yes, really - just minutes later in the first-half, registering yet another shot on target from the quadrant only to be denied by the 'keeper this time around.

Luiz almost scored another corner.

Luiz pulled it off in training too

It gets even better, though, because Villa revealed remarkable training footage after full-time that shows Luiz had indeed been practicing his party trick the day before - and scoring it for good measure.

So he scored a corner in training, he scored one in a game and he almost scored another just a few moments later, but is this just something that Luiz has come up with in the last few days?

Luiz's corner goal in pre-season

Well, fear not, dear reader, because there's more. In fact, we have another Luiz finish that actually found the back of the net in a game scenario, albeit in a pre-season friendly as opposed to an official cup game.

Nevertheless, it really underpins Luiz's bizarre talent when you see that he scored yet another direct corner during a clash with Walsall this summer. Though, admittedly, he did get a helping hand along the way.

There you have it then, Luiz is well and truly a man on a mission this season.

With two Olympic goals already in the bag and yet more practice going on behind the scenes, it seems as though Luiz can safely lay claim to one of the best and most random skills in men's football right now.

It's fair to say that Lukasz Fabianski will be paying extra close attention if the Villa midfielder lines up a corner when West Ham United come to town this weekend, that's for sure.
