Manchester United have ‘gone back in late’ for Ajax winger Antony as deadline day fast approaches, according to Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth.

The 22-year-old has been a top target of Erik ten Hag’s throughout the summer, and it seems as though the new Red Devils boss has not given up hope of securing his signature just yet.

What is the latest news involving Antony?

David Ornstein of The Athletic reported that United had revived their interest in Antony with an €80 million (£67.6m) bid that was swiftly turned down by the Amsterdam giants.

It was claimed that the Old Trafford hierarchy are not ‘optimistic’ of their chances of prising the Brazil international away from the Johan Cruijff ArenA after their latest approach was rebuffed.

However, Sky Sports have revealed that United are considering a renewed attempt to sign Antony despite being reluctant to pay more than £67.9m.

The 20-time English champions are thought to be encouraged by the attacker's omission from the Ajax squad for Sunday's 1-0 win over Sparta Rotterdam and could restructure their latest offer.

What has Sheth said about Antony?

In an interview with GiveMeSport, Sheth said: “I mean, a bit like Frenkie de Jong, in the forward positions right at the start of the window, he was the number one target.

“And then it kind of went quiet and United were looking at alternatives, and Antony started the season with Ajax. He was starting both of their opening two games, and so the general consensus was that this one is not going to happen.

“I just wonder if something changed after the first two games for Manchester United, after they had that defeat at home to Brighton, after they lost at Brentford in humiliating circumstances.

“I just wonder whether that had changed the attitude at Old Trafford and whether Erik ten Hag then went to the board and said, ‘look, we're in a bit of trouble here, let's go try and get our first target again’.

“So, I think what happened then is United have gone back in late and they made a bid of 80 million.”

Where would Antony fit in?

Antony has almost exclusively lined up on the right-wing throughout his career and has registered 24 goals and 22 assists in 82 appearances for Ajax.

Therefore, the South American star would likely compete with the likes of Jadon Sancho, Anthony Elanga and Anthony Martial for a starting berth should he make the switch to United.

With Cristiano Ronaldo’s future still up in the air, Antony could provide the attacking impetus needed if the five-time Ballon d’Or winner does depart.
