Leeds United are ‘definitely interested’ in signing FC Zurich striker Wilfried Gnonto at Elland Road, according to Sky Sports reporter Tim Thornton.

Jesse Marsch has overseen a busy transfer window in West Yorkshire but still has time to add to his squad ahead of the September 1 deadline.

What is the latest on Gnonto?

After Patrick Bamford picked up an injury against Southampton, the Leeds boss once again admitted that the club were looking to sign a striker before the end of the window.

Italy international Gnonto is one of the names linked with a move to the club this summer and it is understood a £3.4 million bid has already been rejected for his services.

According to 90Min, Leeds are hoping to secure a deal in the region of £4 million, with the 18-year-old entering the final year of his contract.

However, reports in Italy have suggested that the Swiss side are holding out for just over £8 million.

But a boost has come the way of the Whites with Gnonto agreeing to personal terms over a move to Elland Road, according to Football Insider.

What has Thornton said on a move for Gnonto?

Thornton understands that Leeds are definitely interested in signing Gnonto, although he adds that it could be a deal for future windows too.

He also adds that ensuring the progress of academy graduate Joe Gelhardt is not hampered by a new arrival is something the club have to bear in mind.

Thornton told GIVEMESPORT: “He might be one that they've identified for now, or maybe for January, or even for next year. He's still a young player and, again, if he were to come in, what does that do for Joe Gelhardt? They’ve got to balance that out as well. So I think he's one they're definitely interested in.”

Would Gnonto be a good signing for Leeds?

There is no doubting that Gnonto has enormous potential and, having already bagged 12 goals for Zurich (including 10 last term alone), he has shown he knows where the back of the net is.

Bamford will undoubtedly remain the number one choice moving forward at Elland Road, but after missing 30 matches last season with injury, there is no doubting that backup is required.

Gnonto may be the perfect fit. At 18, he is unlikely to arrive expecting to start regularly and can prepare himself to replace Bamford when the time comes in the future.

Nevertheless, if called upon, he has shown he has the quality to score the necessary goals for Leeds.
