Darrius Flowers earned himself a UFC contract last night with a crazy Undertaker-style piledriver finish.
Over the course of the last few years, Dana Whiteâs Contender Series has served as a wonderful opportunity for fighters from around the world to prove themselves to the UFC president - and to mixed martial arts fans.
They come onto the show knowing that if they can land that one decisive shot, or put on an impressive performance, they could be on their way to earning a UFC contract.
More often than not we tend to see a few upsets take place, too, adding to the sense of unpredictability thatâll always keep people coming back for more.
On Tuesday night, we were treated to the fifth week of fights this season - and the fourth straight week of consistent, unfiltered carnage from beginning to end.
Everyone was looking to make a statement and convince Dana White that theyâre ready to take the next step up in their career. Darrius Flowers was one of those indivduals and when he was given the opportunity to prove a point against Amiran Gogoladze, he took it with both hands.
After being stuck in an awkward position, Flowers got to his feet and slammed Gogoladze to the canvas with real authority. From there, the Georgian was forced to tap due to a shoulder injury that appeared to come from the slam.
As noted at the top, we couldnât help but think of a certain Deadman from WWE when taking a look at this piledriver.
Whiteâs inspiration
After White handed out contracts to all five winners on the night, he was asked about Flowers and why he opted to give him a shot during a media scrum.
âHeâs standing in there - he told me he was going to do that. Yeah. First I was in the back and he came out and asked the matchmakers where I was, when heâs standing in the Octagon. Then I came out and he said nobody is gonna stand in between me and my dreams, everybody thinks Iâm this way and that way, I couldnât hear everything exactly but he was like Iâm gonna smash this dude right now. Then he literally did what he said he was gonna do. How do you not bring him in?â
