Newcastle United have always had Alexander Isak ‘high on their agenda’ this summer but Dominic Calvert-Lewin was the top choice, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

Eddie Howe has overseen a strong start to the Premier League season at St James’ Park and still has time to bolster his squad ahead of the September 1 deadline.

What is the latest news on Isak?

According to The Athletic, Newcastle have agreed a deal to sign the Sweden international from Sociedad.

The report states that the entire agreement is worth in region of £60 million with Isak’s move to the North East now imminent.

If the deal is completed, it will see the 22-year-old leapfrog January signing Bruno Guimaraes as the Magpies’ most expensive signing.

Meanwhile, it has been reported that Newcastle have also agreed a deal for Watford forward Joao Pedro, worth up to £30 million, although the Hornets are understood to hold reservations over the structure of the payments.

What has Jones said on the deal for Isak?

Jones claims that, while Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin was the club’s top target at the start of the summer, Isak has always been high on the list as well.

The transfer insider says that Isak has previously told Real Sociedad that he wanted to leave if an acceptable offer came.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “Calvert-Lewin was the man Newcastle had primed as their striking option but Isak has always been high on the agenda and the player told his club he wanted to leave if an offer came in. The wheels clicked into motion and this is going to be a serious signing, he’s a really good forward.”

Will Isak be a good signing for Newcastle?

The £48,000 per-week marksman is certainly an exciting acquisition at face value, with a number of top European clubs previously linked with his signature.

Aged just 22, he has plenty of potential to improve, although £60 million is still a big price to pay for his services.

But Isak certainly knows where the back of the net is, having scored 44 times in 132 games for Real Sociedad, taking his career tally to 58 strikes.

He is already a staple of the Swedish national side as well, having racked up 37 caps and scored nine goals.

Isak has already collected a healthy amount of silverware to date too, lifting the DFB-Pokal with Borussia Dortmund and the Copa Del Rey with Real Sociedad, something that will no doubt appeal to Newcastle’s ambitious owners.
