Manchester United picked up their first win of the season on Monday evening.

The Red Devils lost their opening two Premier League fixtures against Brighton and Brentford, the latter of those a 4-0 thrashing away from home.

But Erik ten Hag's side looked a completely different side when Liverpool made the short trip to Old Trafford.

United secured victory by a 2-1 scoreline, Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford the goalscorers on the night.

Pretty much every single member of the home side's squad who featured in the match turned in a top-quality display - Lisandro Martinez in particular.

The Argentine defender was hauled of at half-time in the hammering at Brentford, but looked worth every single penny of his £56.7 million transfer fee in the win over Liverpool.

Alongside Raphael Varane in the centre of defence, Martinez was a man possessed, putting his body on the line to nullify the threat from Mohamed Salah, Luis Diaz and Roberto Firmino.

The 24-year-old's individual highlights from the game are a masterclass in the pragmatic side of the game and his celebration straight after the full-time whistle was top notch as well.

Martinez fell to his knees and pounded the Old Trafford turf when victory was officially confirmed, before getting to his feet and oozing more passion.

Unsurprisingly, United fans are absolutely loving it...

Fan reaction

There's a new fan favourite at Old Trafford - and his name is Lisandro 'The Butcher' Martinez!

The former Ajax man's ability to play as a centre-back in the Premier League has been questioned a lot in recent weeks, mainly due to his height.

Martinez stands at 5'9", which as any football lover will know is relatively short for a player in the position.

But against Liverpool, he looked like an absolute giant and didn't lose a single one of his aerial duels.

Martinez and Varane's impressive performances on Monday evening mean club captain Harry Maguire will almost certainly have to make do with a place on the bench for the foreseeable future.

The England international - who cost United £85 million - has struggled immensely over the past 12 months or so and it was clear Ten Hag had to take him out of the firing line.

If Martinez and Varane remain fully fit, game time is going to be incredibly hard to come by for Maguire in 2022/23...
