Chelsea have ‘no interest’ in signing Manchester United defender Harry Maguire at Stamford Bridge before the transfer window shuts, according to journalist Simon Phillips.

Thomas Tuchel has overseen a busy few months of business in west London but can still add to his squad ahead of the September 1 deadline.

What is the latest news on Maguire?

According to MailOnline, Chelsea were considering a move for Maguire as they struggled to agree a transfer fee with Leicester City for Wesley Fofana.

The £80 million signing was dropped by Erik ten Hag for United’s clash with Liverpool on Monday with the report suggesting that Chelsea were now seriously considering a move.

This week saw Leicester reject a third bid from the Blues for the services of Fofana, understood to be in the region of £70 million. However, as per The Athletic, an agreement between the two clubs is now in place.

According to The Telegraph, the Foxes were holding out for a fee that would've surpassed that paid by United for Maguire, but it appears the final figure will be just under that.

The Telegraph's report states that Fofana is part of a late dash in the market to also land Barcelona forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Everton winger Anthony Gordon.

What has Phillips said on Maguire?

Phillips understands that the United captain may well have been mentioned in passing in conversations among Tuchel and the board.

But the journalist adds that there is currently little to no chance of the west Londoners making a move for the England ace this summer.

Phillips told GIVEMESPORT: “At the very most, maybe he might have been a name that was mentioned amongst the Chelsea hierarchy and Thomas Tuchel early on in the window as a name they might look at. But in terms of any solid or serious interest, I can confidently tell you that there isn't any at all in Harry Maguire at the moment.”

Do Chelsea need Maguire?

Leicester did not make it easy for Todd Boehly and co. in their pursuit of Fofana ahead of the deadline so it is no surprise that there was a backup option in mind.

Maguire has always been at his best when playing in Gareth Southgate’s 3-4-2-1 formation with England so it is easy to see how he could have been of benefit to Chelsea.

However, Fofana now looks to be in the bag, so Maguire is probably not needed at Stamford Bridge.
