Leon Edwards shocked the world, especially those enthralled in the UFC as he became the welterweight champion after spectacularly dethroning Kamaru Usman with a brutal KO which could easily be the knockout of the year given the context.

The Brit was struggling in the fight, after winning the opening round, it was one way traffic as the Nigerian champion asserted himself expertly, showing us all why he is a great champion.

However, in the dying stages, Edwards pulled out a monster shot to win the match, sending his opponent to the canvas out cold with a brutal kick to the head, ensuring he left the Octagon as a UFC champion, achieving his childhood dream in spectacular fashion.

There was very little he could have done to stop the knockout, with it catching us all be surprise, even Joe Rogan on commentary who had the following to say on the carnage: “Nothing compares. It’s the greatest head-kick knockout in the history of the sport – with the most consequences, the most at stake, the most doubt, the most people counting him out, including us.”

It just goes to show just what was at stake and how far down he was in the fight, he was considerably beaten had he not landed the knockout shot.

After the fight, people obviously took to social media to have their say, with Conor McGregor firing out abusive tweets towards the former champion like they were going out of fashion!

Leon Edwards KO Kamaru Usman

Kamaru Usman was knocked out by Leon Edwards in their rematch

However, one video emerged from a kickboxing fight, although it is different to UFC, there are aspects that are similar.

The clip shows one fighter trying to pull off a spinning kick to his opponent’s head to try and knock him out in similar fashion to the Edwards one, although he wasn’t as successful.

In slightly different circumstances to Edwards’ KO, the other fighter actually caught the leg of his opponent, giving him the upper hand considerably in the fight, with the other fighter completely helpless with just one leg to use.

With one arm clutching the leg of his competitor, a brutal knockout punch was thrown, sending his opponent flying to the canvas.

Now that is one spectacular way to finish a fight in combat sports, surely having to rival that of Edwards’, although there wasn’t as much on this one as it appears to be a minor event, not a world championship fight in the UFC.
