Manchester United will ‘probably’ secure the signing of Ajax winger Antony before September’s deadline, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Red Devils have been tracking the 22-year-old throughout the summer and finally appear to be closing in on his signature following a lengthy pursuit.

What is the latest news involving Antony?

David Ornstein of The Athletic recently revealed that United had rekindled their interest in Antony with an €80 million (£67.6m) bid that was quickly rejected by the reigning Eredivisie champions.

And transfer guru Fabrizio Romano then stated that the Red Devils ‘have communicated’ to the Brazil international his representatives that they plan to submit a new official proposal in order to get the deal done as soon as possible.

Reliable reporter Santi Aouna has since provided another update on Antony’s situation, claiming that United are preparing a fresh offer worth €100m (£84m) for the attacker.

It’s believed that Ajax could be prepared to accept the terms, sanctioning the sale of another one of their star performers in what has been a turbulent summer for them.

Antony still has three years remaining on his contract at the Johan Cruijff ArenA but was left out of Ajax’s recent victory over Sparta Rotterdam due to the continued speculation surrounding his future.

What has Jones said about Antony?

United are believed to be targeting Antony, a right-back and a goalkeeper in what remains of the summer transfer window following an underwhelming start to 2022/23.

And Jones reckons that the 20-time English champions will be successful in their pursuit of the South American.

In an interview with GiveMeSport, he said: “The player wants to test himself; he trusts (Erik) Ten Hag that he is a good fit for what he's trying to build. And so, I think when you take that all into account, it probably will happen.”

What could Man Utd’s forward line look like?

United enjoyed their first win of the season against bitter rivals Liverpool last time out, lining up with Marcus Rashford through the middle, Anthony Elanga on the left-hand-side, and Jadon Sancho on the opposite flank.

Anthony Martial surprisingly replaced Elanga at half-time, though, and put in a solid display upfront, with Rashford moving out wide.

Antony is most comfortable when playing on the right-wing, allowing him to cut inside onto his favoured left foot and pose a threat to the opposition’s goal.

His arrival in the red half of Manchester would give Erik ten Hag plenty of options in the final third of the pitch and could help United get back into the Champions League and beyond.
