The final Grand Slam of 2022 is almost upon us, with the US Open now only days away.

Last year’s tournament saw Emma Raducanu storm to her maiden major title in the women’s singles, while Novak Djokovic was denied the chance to win the Calendar Slam by Daniil Medvedev.

Over the years, there have been some memorable matches at Flushing Meadows, including surprise upsets and marathon victories.

To celebrate some of the iconic battles to have taken place in New York, we’ve ranked our top five US Open matches in history.

Honourable mentions must go to Bianca Andreescu beating Serena Williams in 2019 and John McEnroe’s victory against Bjorn Borg in 1980.

However, both narrowly missed out on our list. Check out our top picks below:

5. Andy Murray vs Novak Djokovic - 2012

Murray had lost his first four Grand Slam finals and was desperate to finally break his duck.

Djokovic, meanwhile, had already won five major titles and was the defending champion in New York.

Murray won the first two sets before the Serbian fought back in typical fashion to level the match at two sets all.

In a match which lasted four hours and 54 minutes, it was the Brit who emerged victorious in the decider.

4. Emma Raducanu vs Leylah Fernandez - 2021

Ranked outside the world’s top 300 this time last year, Raducanu was forced to win three matches to even qualify for the main draw.

Remarkably, the Brit won 10 matches in succession without dropping a set to seal a fairytale victory in New York.

In the final, Raducanu played fellow teen Leylah Fernandez and beat the Canadian in a match which featured some of the finest rallies you’ll ever wish to see.

3. Venus Williams vs Serena Williams - 2008

The Williams sisters have met in countless major finals over the years, but their quarter-final clash in 2008 was one to remember.

Venus took the first set, but Serena bounced back to win the second and third.

Serena went on to win the tournament –– defeating Jelena Jankovic in the final.

Tennis magazine proclaimed the match the best of 2008.

2. Pete Sampras vs Andre Agassi - 2001

Two of the great American male tennis stars faced off in front of a home crowd in 2001.

In a match that extended long into the night, it was Sampras who emerged victorious in four fiercely contested sets.

Sampras went on to reach the final but lost to Lleyton Hewitt.

1. Novak Djokovic vs Roger Federer - 2011

It seemed as though Federer was destined to reach the final at one stage of this match, especially after dominating the first two sets.

Yet, Djokovic bounced back to win the next three sets and then went on to defeat Rafael Nadal in the final.

The Serbian also saved two match points against Federer, making him the first US Open champion to win the tournament after facing match points.
