Iconic 90s TV show Gladiators is coming back to BBC in 2023

‘Contenders, you will go on my first whistle. Gladiators, you will go on my second whistle.’

Remember this iconic quote? Well, get ready to (hopefully) hear it again next year!

The hugely popular 90s television show Gladiators, which saw members of the public battle it out against the show’s cast of bodybuilders and gymnasts, known as Gladiators, is coming back to the BBC in 2023 with an 11-episode series.

The show, which featured household names such as Jet, Wolf, Lightning, Warrior and Cobra is returning on BBC and children of the 90s will be absolutely buzzing about the news.

The show is returning in the same format, which each week featured contenders competing in gruelling events against the gladiators.

Kate Phillips, director of Unscripted at the BBC, has released a statement on the planned return of the iconic game show, saying: “Gladiators is back and a whole new generation of viewers can now look forward to watching a Saturday night spectacle like no other. Will the contenders have the will and the skill to succeed against our mighty new Gladiators? You’ll have to tune in to find out!”

Gladiators, which created so much nostalgia for 90s audiences, is hoping to have similar impact on this new generation of viewers.

Gladiators, which created so much nostalgia for 90s audiences, is hoping to have similar impact on this new generation of viewers.

An example of such an iconic moment is through former referee John Anderson and his famous call of, “Contenders ready? Gladiators ready?” as he counted down to each game.

Staying true to what made the show so popular, the new series will still have the classic challenges, but will also have additional challenges which all lead up to the hardest challenge of them all, the obstacle course known as ‘The Eliminator.’

The format of the show, which originated in the US and travelled to Australia, South Africa, Russia, Finland, Germany, Nigeria, Denmark and Sweden was so popular that it has seen many spin-offs and was briefly revived by Sky One in 2009, but only lasted two series.

The new BBC rebooted programme will be filmed at Utilita Arena Sheffield in 2023, while the new hosts have yet to be announced.

Who’s this Premier League icon from the 2000s?

Dan Baldwin, managing director of Hungry Bear, commented: “It’s the perfect time for Gladiators to return. What other show combines electric excitement, superheroes, giant sponge fingers, elite athletes, and a pinch of pantomime? Watch out for the new breed of superhuman, supersized, superstars bursting on to your screens on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.”
