Memphis Depay's time as a Manchester United player was incredibly forgettable.

The Dutchman signed in 2014 and was immediately given the number seven shirt, expected to be the young starlet that would propel the club forward again under Louis van Gaal.

Quite the opposite happened. Depay was very quickly out of his depth and failed to deliver on the promise he arrived with, and underwhelmed massively before leaving in 2017.

It would've been very easy for Depay to fade into obscurity after such a poor spell at United, where it all looked too much, too soon.

But, credit to him, he completely rebuilt himself at Lyon and finally looked like the player everyone expected him to turn into as he matured and found his stride in Ligue 1.

That resulted in him getting another chance at Europe's elite level in 2021, as he signed for Barcelona on a free transfer.

Just a year later, though, Depay again finds himself cast aside by a fallen giant of a club and looks set to leave after failing to hit the ground running. And with a transfer to Juventus falling through, per Fabrizio Romano, a 'new' club has emerged as a potential destination - his former employers.

United are said to be considering a move for Depay before the transfer window shuts, with the Dutch forward available for a cut price, according to Samuel Luckhurst of the Manchester Evening News.

Barcelona are keen to offload the 28-year-old despite only signing him last season, as they scramble to recoup finances in order to keep their own rebuild together. And with United still trying to strengthen their squad, re-signing Depay in a cut-price deal could prove an unexpected, but shrewd piece of business.

Depay's time at United was underwhelming and many fans were bitterly disappointed with how things worked out, especially with the talent and the ceiling being there. He showed in spurts what he was capable of, but could never make it stick and was instead remembered more for his blunders.

One blunder that sneaks under the radar in his unfortunate United highlights reel, though, is his miserable attempt at an overhead kick in 2016, during Wayne Rooney's testimonial.

Taking to the pitch in the United legend's testimonial against Everton, Depay - who had a dwindling reputation as a flair player at this point - tried to turn on the style with the acrobatic effort, but failed in truly glaring style.

It was so bad that it prompted a rather embarrassing reaction from Rooney in the stands. Be sure to check it out below.

WATCH: Rooney bursts into laughter watching Depay

Dear oh dear.

It's so bad that even Rooney's son Kai can't help but chuckle at the effort.

Depay flings himself in the air, but seems to give up halfway through the movement and flops to the floor, creating a truly pathetic attempt at such a difficult skill to pull off. Seeing finishing like this, it's not hard to believe that the testimonial finished 0-0.

Seriously, it requires maximum concentration as well as obvious ability - which Depay does grace - but he simply picked the wrong time. And when you've got Rooney in the stands watching over you, who scored one of the greatest Premier League goals ever from an overhead kick, you ought to make a better go of it.

The 28-year-old is undoubtedly a top player when operating at his best, though, and the chance to move back to United and right the wrongs of his first spell feels like the perfect opportunity for a redemption arc.

Ten Hag would surely get the most out of a player of Depay's profile and now he is older and wiser, fans would have hoped he learned from mistakes he made during his first stint as a Red Devil.
