Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has set his sights on signing Cody Gakpo as a potential replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo and the Dutchman is confident the PSV Eindhoven star would be a success at Old Trafford, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

The Red Devils recorded their second consecutive win thanks to overcoming Southampton on Saturday, but ten Hag could sanction signings and departures ahead of Thursday's 11pm transfer deadline.

What's the latest news involving Gakpo?

According to Football Insider, Manchester United have submitted a £25million take-it-or-leave-it bid for PSV star Gakpo.

The report suggests ten Hag, who took over as the Red Devils' chief during the summer, has given the green light to strike a deal for the 23-year-old.

However, it is understood that PSV value Gakpo at £35million and are unwilling to sanction his departure unless their demands are met.

With the wide-man's contract still having three years remaining, the Eredivisie giants are in a strong negotiating position.

Manchester United are not Gakpo's only suitors, as journalist Simon Phillips has told GIVEMESPORT that Everton could head to the negotiating table if Anthony Gordon seals his switch to Chelsea.

What has Dean Jones said about Gakpo?

Jones believes Manchester United would be left with a lack of options if Ronaldo's wish to leave the club is granted.

As a result, the journalist understands that ten Hag has set his sights on landing Gakpo as a replacement ahead of the deadline.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: "If Ronaldo did leave, United would obviously still be short in attack in terms of numbers and quality.

"That's where they would look to get Gakpo into. He has always been a back-up option.

"Ten Hag has seen enough of him in the past to believe that he would work for him."

Would Gakpo be a good signing for Manchester United?

Gakpo may still be in the early stages of his career, but he has already claimed plenty of silverware with PSV, including the Eredivisie title.

His performances have also seen him win seven caps for the Netherlands and, with the 2022 World Cup in Qatar just around the corner, Gakpo would be eager to make an instant impact if he were to head to Manchester United.

The PSV man has wasted no time in showing that he is capable of being a major threat in the attacking third of the pitch, having racked up more than 80 goal contributions, so ten Hag could make a shrewd move by swooping for his fellow countryman.
