Newcastle United could ‘bid for a central midfielder’ ahead of the transfer window closing, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Magpies recently pulled off a club-record signing by bringing Alexander Isak in from Real Sociedad in a £63 million deal but may still make further additions ahead of September’s deadline.

What is the latest news involving Newcastle?

Manager Eddie Howe prioritised improving his defensive options at the start of the summer, bringing in goalkeeper Nick Pope and defenders Matt Targett and Sven Botman.

And the 44-year-old tactician has now been able to bolster his ranks in the final third of the pitch with the acquisition of Isak, who registered 44 goals and eight assists in 132 appearances for Sociedad.

However, Newcastle are still to recruit in the middle of the park during the current window despite being heavily linked with several players.

The North East outfit reportedly saw a £50 million offer for Leicester City’s James Maddison turned down while Lucas Paqueta was also said to be on their radar prior to West Ham’s advances.

With Jonjo Shelvey sidelined for several months through injury, it’s an area of the pitch that Howe may well be focussing his attention on in the final days of the summer market.

What has Jones said about Newcastle?

Howe previously admitted prior to Isak’s arrival that he is still looking for two players, indicating that there could be one more new signing still to come.

And Jones has informed GiveMeSport that there is still a ‘probable scenario’ where Newcastle sign a midfielder.

He said: “Throughout the summer, I've been told that there's still a probable scenario where they bid for a central midfielder as well. So, I'm not going to rule that out.”

Who could Newcastle sign?

Earlier this month, 90min reported that both Crystal Palace and Newcastle have asked Chelsea about the availability of Conor Gallagher.

It’s claimed that both of the 22-year-old’s potential suitors were informed that he has no intention of departing Stamford Bridge, but that stance may have softened since.

Gallagher was hauled off just past the hour mark after making his first start for Chelsea against Leeds United in the 3-0 defeat before he was sent off last time out against Leicester.

Whether Thomas Tuchel is now willing to sanction Gallagher’s exit either on a temporary or permanent basis remains to be seen, yet it’s a situation Newcastle will surely be monitoring closely.
