Allan Saint-Maximin has just saved the day for Newcastle United.Toon's near-perfect start to the new Premier League season looked to have unravelled on Sunday as they entered the final seconds of their trip to Wolverhampton Wanderers trailing 1-0.Nick Pope was left clutching at thin air when Wolves took the lead with 38 minutes on the clock courtesy of Ruben Neves' umpteen-millionth goal from the outside the penalty area.

Saint-Maximin saves the day

Neves showed his typical, unerring poise from long range by setting himself from Gonçalo Guedes's pass and duly firing a sizzling strike into the arms of the net.

However, despite it looking as though Newcastle were going to make the trip back up north empty handed, Saint-Maximin defiantly decided that Neves' wonder strike wouldn't even be the best goal of the game.

That's because Eddie Howe's entertainer in chief produced an inspired moment in the dying moment of the game as he scored what could well be the Premier League's goal of the season so far.

Saint-Maximin's thumping volley

With the ball sitting up beautifully for him on the edge of the box, Saint-Maximin opted against showing his skills via repetitive step-overs and fancy tricks, but rather with pitch-perfect volley technique.

That's because 25-year-old displayed the poise, posture and precision of dreams to meet the ball with a thumping right-footed strike that Jose Sa could only watch and admire as it buried itself into the net.

Unbelievable technique involved

It might not have crashed in off the crossbar, it might not have nestled right in the top corner, it might not have come from 40 yards out, but nobody can doubt for a second just how difficult it is to catch a strike like that.

When the ball is dropping out of the air in exactly the fashion it did for Saint-Maximin at Molineux, the micro-adjustments you need to make in your body shape in the space of mere seconds is just unbelievable.

Even some of the greatest players in history have taken on volleys like that before and either watched it find a home in Row Z or seen it bobble miles wide for a throw-in.

Saint-Maximin: Pure, pure class

So the fact that Saint-Maximin has pulled off what could well be the pick of August's Premier League goals is the latest reminder of just how much talent he packs into his fleet-footed boots.

We all know the Newcastle star as a box of tricks who can tie defenders' legs into bows, but he's so much more than simply a skill merchant, showing in recent weeks that he's a remarkably well-rounded player.

And the more we see that Saint-Maximin can indeed deliver the end product that he's so often accused of lacking, the more Premier League fans will wake up to just how impeccable he truly is.
