A video has emerged online of Lewis Hamilton walking back to the garage following his retirement from the Belgian Grand Prix, and it has gained mass attention online with many fans expressing sympathy for the Mercedes driver who has had a season to forget, by his exceptional standards.

The seven-time world champion retired from the Belgian Grand Prix on the first lap following a collision with Alpine’s Fernando Alonso at Les Combes.

The Brit tried to continue, however, soon dropped behind the pack before having to retire the car.

And following a telling off by way of a finger wag from rival Alonso, Hamilton found himself having to walk back to the paddock, which was dramatically filmed and has gone on to become a hit on the internet.

The video showing Hamilton looking very forlorn as he walked along the barren service road has attracted lots of attention online due to its meme material, with comments such as, “Lewis Hamilton walking away into the forest/quarry will be a fun meme,” and “That shot of Lewis Hamilton walking down the service road is maybe the most unintentionally hilarious thing about this F1 season."

As the memes continued online, a lot of fans on Reddit could only praise the cameraman for his work, as he dramatically chose to stop walking, filming Hamilton walking off into the distance, cutting a devastated figure.

While it may be funny to some, to Hamilton and his loyal fans, the Brit’s continuous struggles will be no laughing matter, with the 37-year-old reportedly having stayed up working in the garage past midnight following a tough qualifying session on Saturday.

Hamilton said of his late-night grind that he was 'trying to figure out how to win. Still working on the theory and constantly just trying to see, make sure there’s no stone unturned basically so today we can maximise.'

The seven-time world champion’s hard work and dedication the night before makes his first lap crash out of the Belgian Grand Prix even more painful and fitting for the Brit’s tale of terrible luck this season.

However, Hamilton did not absolve responsibility for the crash, admitting fault for the collision, explaining: “Looking back at the footage he was in my blind spot, I didn’t give him enough space. It is my fault. Just, so sorry to the team. I could not see him. I am sorry to the team and I need to recuperate and get back on the treadmill.”

We assume that Hamilton’s ‘treadmill’ training is not training for his long service road walks, but, rather that the racing legend is going to try and avoid any future crashes and to close that gap on Red Bull and Ferrari, securing some more podiums to finish this season with a more positive spin.
