Canelo Alvarez has given his thoughts on Kamaru Usman’s knockout defeat to Leon Edwards at UFC 278.

For the longest time now Canelo Alvarez has been viewed as one of the pound-for-pound best fighters in the sport of boxing. The Mexican sensation has spent the last few years turning back the majority of challengers and champions who have come his way, with Dmitry Bivol being the only man who was able to stop him in his tracks.

On the flip side, Kamaru Usman has been hailed as one of the greatest fighters of his generation - and perhaps even one of the best of all-time.

Unfortunately for ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’, his world came crashing down around him at UFC 278 when he was knocked out by Leon Edwards in the final minute of their five-round main event.

It’s no secret that Kamaru had been calling Canelo out in the hope of landing a crossover fight against him and even though the rumours had faded, Alvarez was still asked how he felt about the UFC star’s loss during a recent media scrum.

“You know, this happens, it’s all part of the sport. Everybody can lose, you never know. I think he was winning, right? One single punch [kick] changed everything. Look, he’s a great fighter.”

Alvarez and Usman both have two career losses on their record but as we’re about to touch on, it feels like they’re far from being done with their respective sports.

What’s next for both?

Next month, Canelo will hope to finally put an end to his five-year feud with Gennady Golovkin as they wage war over the WBA (Super), WBC, IBF, WBO, and The Ring super middleweight titles. It follows on from Alvarez picking up a win and a draw in their previous two meetings back in 2017 and 2018, with this almost certainly being the final time the pair will meet in the middle of the squared circle.

Usman, meanwhile, is out for revenge, and it seems as if he’ll get his shot next year in a highly-anticipted trilogy fight against new UFC welterweight champion Leon Edwards.
