Southampton have made an official bid to sign PSV Eindhoven winger Cody Gakpo, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The transfer guru reckons that Saints are interested in signing the Netherlands international before the window closes.

What's the latest news involving Gakpo?

Gakpo has been on Manchester United's radar all season, but following Antony's switch to Old Trafford, the Red Devils' interest has cooled, which gives Southampton's hopes a boost.

Ralph Hasenhuttl has already welcomed six players on board this summer and his new arrivals have helped the St Mary's club make a bright start to the season, which included a 2-1 win over Chelsea on Tuesday.

But the Austrian manager is yet to sign any wingers, which explains their interest in Gakpo, who's been one of the top wide players across Europe in recent years.

According to the Telegraph, Southampton saw a £21.4m bid knocked back for the Dutchman, who PSV value at £38.4m and are willing to offload if their asking price is met.

Despite those claims, while Romano confirmed that Gakpo is a player of interest to Saints, he doesn't believe an offer has been made.

What did Romano say about Gakpo?

He told GIVEMESPORT: "It is true they hold an interest in Cody Gakpo, and I'm told they have made an official bid.

"So, let's see if they decide to go for it [pay what it takes to get him], while it's also important to understand the player's idea."

Do Southampton need Gakpo?

It's been a promising start to the season for Southampton, who've responded to their opening day defeat at Tottenham by collecting seven points from a possible 12 available.

But the south coast outfit are still lacking in the wide areas, meaning Gakpo would be a statement signing and add huge quality to Hasenhuttl's squad.

None of Southampton's wide players scored more than four goals in the Premier League last season, with Mohamed Elyounoussi the only winger in the entire squad to find the net more than twice.

On the other hand, Gakpo scored 21 goals and laid on 15 assists, while he's already racked up 85 goal contributions in just 143 games for PSV and is a proven performer in top level football.

There's nothing to suggest that Gakpo could replicate that type of form in the Premier League, but he would instantly improve Southampton's wide options.
